We’ve all heard the golden rule: Visit the dentist every six months. But have you ever wondered why? Or if that’s the right schedule for you? Our family dentist in Duncan, OK, breaks it down with some fun and friendly advice to keep those pearly whites shining and your smile bright!

Have you been postponing your overdue dental visit? Take action and contact Chisholm Trail Smile Center today. Our friendly family dentist in Duncan, OK, can get you out the door with a fresher, healthier smile in no time! Call (580) 255-4880 for an appointment now.

The General Rule: Every Six Months

First things first—why six months? Well, according to our family dentist in Duncan, OK, regular dental visits are like oil changes for your car. They keep everything running smoothly!

Our family dentist in Duncan, OK, isn’t just looking for cavities or cleaning your teeth (though that’s super important, too!). They’re also checking for early signs of gum disease, oral cancer, and other health issues that could be brewing.

Every six months is a sweet spot that allows Dr. Bridges to catch problems before they become big (and painful) deals. Think of it as your smile’s bi-annual check-up—a little TLC to ensure you keep flashing those gorgeous grins for years to come.

When to Visit More Often: Listen to Your Mouth

While the six-month rule is a great guideline, it’s not one-size-fits-all. Your mouth might be giving you subtle (or not-so-subtle) hints that it’s time to see the dentist more frequently. Here’s what to watch for:

Tooth Pain or Sensitivity

If you’re wincing every time you sip hot coffee or ice-cold water, it’s time to talk to our family dentist in Duncan, OK. Tooth pain or sensitivity can signal a variety of issues, from cavities to worn enamel. And guess what? Early treatment can save you a world of hurt (and expense) later on.

Bleeding Gums

Bleeding gums can be an early sign of gum disease, which is much easier to treat in its early stages. Don’t ignore it—your gums are the foundation of a healthy smile, so give them the care they deserve.

Persistent Bad Breath

We’ve all had garlic breath after a meal, but if your bad breath sticks around even after brushing, it could be a sign of an underlying issue. Whether it’s gum disease, dry mouth, or something else, a visit to our family dentist in Duncan, OK, can help you freshen up.

Changes in Your Mouth

Notice a new spot or sore that hasn’t healed? A loose tooth? Changes in your bite or the way your teeth fit together? These changes could be signals of something serious, so don’t wait—book that appointment ASAP!

Dry Mouth

Saliva isn’t just there to keep your mouth wet—it also helps protect your teeth from decay. If you’re experiencing dry mouth, it could lead to a higher risk of cavities. Dr. Bridges can help you find ways to get that moisture back.

Keep Smiling with Our Family Dentist in Duncan, OK!

Your dental health is an essential part of your overall well-being, so don’t wait until there’s a problem to see Dr. Bridges. Stick to the six-month rule for general maintenance, but if any of these symptoms pop up, it’s a sign to visit more often.

Request an appointment at Chisholm Trail Smile Center here or call (580) 255-4880 for advice and scheduling now!

4 Types of Oral Infection and What You Can Do https://chisholmtrailsmilecenter.com/4-types-of-oral-infection-and-what-you-can-do/ Thu, 18 Apr 2024 04:11:53 +0000 https://chisholmtrailsmilecenter.com/?p=11431 The post 4 Types of Oral Infection and What You Can Do appeared first on Chisholm Trail.

All infections are caused by bacteria, and the mouth is full of microbes, both good and bad. In fact, it is bacteria that are responsible for cavities. So it’s not uncommon for patients to experience an oral infection. When they do, it’s important to contact a Duncan dentist right away. Symptoms may worsen and bacteria can spread, causing greater damage.

At Chisholm Trail Smile Center in Duncan, OK, Dr. Matthew Bridges treats a variety of oral infections. If your tooth is damaged, he offers state-of-the-art restorative dentistry to repair your smile and renew your bite and speech.

If you believe you may be suffering from an oral infection, contact our office today.

1. An Abscessed Tooth

A dental abscess is a pocket of pus located in the gums near the tooth root. Abscesses often result because of untreated dental decay, though they can also develop due to injury. Symptoms can include pronounced pain, swelling, redness, bad breath, and a visible draining sore.

It’s important to seek treatment for an abscessed tooth right away. Otherwise, the infection could spread to your jaw or sinuses. It could even enter your bloodstream, leading to life-threatening sepsis. Your dentist will first drain the sore. He may be able to save your tooth with root canal therapy, or you may need an extraction.

2. Gum Disease

Gum disease is not only one of the most common types of oral infection. It’s one of the most common types of infection in general. In fact, gingivitis or periodontitis affects nearly half of all adults over age 30.

The condition develops when bacteria accumulate in the gums, causing bleeding and dental sensitivity. Over time, your gums could recede, and you could experience tooth loss. Treatment may consist of a general cleaning for mild gingivitis or a full scaling and root planing for more advanced cases.

3. Thrush

Thrush is an easily treatable fungal infection that most often affects babies and young children. Certain medications, pregnancy, and age also increase the risk of thrush. The oral infection causes white, creamy-looking sores inside the mouth, particularly on the tongue and insides of the cheeks.

Most cases of thrush can be diagnosed solely with a visual exam. The most common treatment is a prescription antifungal medication. Symptoms usually clear up in a week or two.

4. Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease

Hand, foot, and mouse disease is a scary sounding name for a relatively harmless, though highly contagious, condition. It most often affects children under age 5. Symptoms include sores on the inside of the mouth, a rash on the palms and soles of the feet, and a fever.

There is no specific treatment for this type of infection, but it usually goes away on its own in a week to ten days. Make sure you or your child is drinking enough water and getting plenty of rest.

Contact Us If You Are Suffering the Symptoms of an Oral Infection

Though rare, mouth sores could also be signs of something more serious, like oral cancer. If you have any symptoms of an oral infection, contact Chisholm Trail Smile Center right away.

Reach us online or call us at 580-255-4880.

April is National Autism Awareness Month, a time set aside to raise public knowledge of autism and support for those on the spectrum. For children and older individuals with autism, dental hygiene can sometimes prove challenging. That’s why it’s important to find a compassionate family dentist in Duncan, OK, who can provide a full range of general dentistry services.

Dr. Matthew Bridges of Chisholm Trail Smile Center is just such a practitioner. Dr. Bridges is committed to getting to know his patients individually and to providing treatment that is uniquely tailored to each person’s needs. If he is unable to treat a special needs patient, he will be happy to refer you to an area practitioner who can help.

If you are looking for an outstanding family dentist in Duncan, OK, contact Chisholm Trail Smile Center today.

Dental Hygiene for Those with Autism

Individuals with autism often have a hard time maintaining regular dental care. In fact, only about 50% of children with autism brush their teeth twice a day. Further, 61% of parents with autistic children report difficulties with brushing and flossing. For many, these problems are related to sensory processing disorders. The smell or taste of toothpaste or the feel of a toothbrush can be very unnerving for autistic individuals.

Specific Oral Health Challenges

Poor oral hygiene can increase the risk of cavities and gum disease. Additionally, some autistic patients have limited diets, preferring solely soft or puréed foods. Some may avoid fruits and/or vegetables because of sensory issues. Others may have a marked fondness for sweets. Without vigilance, these dietary choices can further increase the risk of tooth decay.

Individuals with autism may have other unique dental health problems. For instance, an estimated 20-25% of autistic patients suffer from bruxism, or chronic teeth grinding. This can lead to dental erosion, cracked teeth, and TMJ disorder. Others may engage in non-nutritive chewing, which can also put excess strain on the teeth. And some may inflict self-injury, such as picking at their lips or gums.

Making Dental Visits Easier for Autism Patients

Because of the increased risk for dental problems, it is especially important for patients with autism to receive regular dental care. But this can also be problematic, since the unusual sights, smells, and sounds of the dental office can be quite upsetting

Dentists who treat autistic patients take many steps to ensure comfortable, low-stress care. For instance, your practitioner may provide specific music, noise-canceling headphones, dimmer lights, weighted blankets, or other calming devices. Depending on a patient’s individual needs, a dentist could limit interactions, or he could be extremely thorough in describing every step of treatment in advance.

The best way you can make dental visits easier for yourself or your loved one is to find the right family dentist in Duncan, OK. Then call ahead to the practice to explain your situation and discuss the right strategies for your upcoming appointment.

As a parent, you want a provider who can provide top-notch general dentistry for all ages. If your child is in or approaching their teens, it’s especially important to find a great family dentist in Duncan, OK. In the adolescent and teenage years, kids face some unique dental health concerns. Among these are the eruption of wisdom teeth and the possibility of tooth extraction.

Dr. Matthew Bridges is a trusted family dentist in Duncan, OK. At Chisholm Trail Smile Center, we use state-of-the-art digital imaging, so we can carefully monitor dental development and tooth eruption. With his conservative approach, Dr. Bridges will never recommend unnecessary tooth extraction. But if wisdom tooth removal is required, you can trust us to provide the best possible care.

To learn more about wisdom teeth or to schedule a consultation for your teen, contact Chisholm Trail Smile Center today

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are a third molars that usually erupt between the ages of 17 and 21. (This is supposedly the age when youth also grow in wisdom, though if you’re in the thick of the teenage years, you may question this nomenclature!)

Though many teens face problems with their wisdom teeth, not everyone is born with them! An analysis of worldwide studies found that 22.63% of people are missing at least one of their wisdom teeth

How do I know if my child needs wisdom tooth removal?

In the past, it was common practice to remove wisdom teeth automatically for all patients. Today, dentists are more discerning and may allow asymptomatic teeth to remain in place.

Beginning in early adolescence, Dr. Bridges will use digital x-rays to evaluate the position of wisdom teeth, as well as the overall shape and size of your child’s jaw. If it looks as though there will not be enough room for the teeth, he will likely recommend extraction before the molars actually start to erupt. This will prevent damage to the other teeth, such as overcrowding and an increased risk for tooth decay. Early removal will also reduce the risk of impaction. This occurs when teeth are not able to emerge fully, instead remaining trapped beneath gum or bone tissue.

When wisdom teeth have already started to erupt, your family dentist in Duncan, OK, will recommend removal if they are causing pain, are infected, or have begun to affect dental alignment

What happens during wisdom tooth extraction?

During a simple extraction, your dentist will simply loosen and remove the tooth from the mouth. If teeth are impacted or have not yet come in, your teen will need a surgical extraction. In these cases, Dr. Bridges will refer you to an area oral surgeon.

To perform a surgical extraction, the doctor will remove the gum or bone tissue covering up the wisdom teeth. To reduce impact to the gums, he or she may take the tooth out in several pieces. Your teen will be given sedation prior to surgery, so they will feel little or nothing during the procedure.

Contact Your Family Dentist in Duncan, OK

It’s important to have your teen’s wisdom teeth evaluated periodically throughout adolescence.

The word “teething” immediately conjures images of screaming babies, cranky toddlers, and sleepless nights. Fortunately, teething isn’t always the nightmare it’s made out to be. And knowing what to expect can make the process a lot easier for everyone. That’s why your Duncan dentist is committed to patient education, as well as great clinical care. Further, when your whole family has the same dental home, it can make visits easier, more convenient, and more comfortable for everyone.

Contact us to schedule your family’s appointments with an outstanding dentist in Duncan, OK.

When do children start teething?

Children typically start teething around 6 months of age. However, this is different for each child. Some begin as early as 3 or 4 months, while others may not have any teeth until they are closer to their first birthdays.

Usually, the first teeth to come in are the two bottom front teeth. Teething will continue until the second molars come in, somewhere around 24 months.

When do children lose their baby teeth?

Most children begin losing their baby teeth around age 6 or 7. Some children begin losing their primary teeth as early as age 4. This is not a cause for concern unless your child has sustained infection or dental trauma that has caused premature tooth loss.

Around the time your child starts losing her first teeth, she will also gain her first permanent molars, aka, “the six-year molars.”

How can I alleviate teething pain?

For infants and toddlers, gum massages and rubber teethers can be quite effective. Just be sure to avoid liquid-filled teethers. And though you can chill them in the fridge, don’t place teethers in the freezer.

Children who have already started solids may enjoy teething biscuits. Older toddlers who are cutting their two-year molars can find relief with cold, crunchy produce. Obviously make sure it is cut appropriately and is not a choking hazard.

You can also check with your pediatrician about pain relievers.

How do I care for my child’s baby teeth?

It comes as a surprise to many parents, but you need to start brushing as soon as those first baby teeth come in. Use a soft brush with a smear of toothpaste the size of a grain of rice.

Diet also plays an important role in dental health. Juice is actually the biggest culprit when it comes to pediatric tooth decay. That’s one reason that the American Association of Pediatrics recommends avoiding juice entirely before the first birthday and strictly limiting it after that.

Finally, it’s important to schedule an appointment with a dentist in Duncan, OK, no more than six months after the first tooth appears. He can monitor your child’s tooth development, look for any potential problems, and provide further guidance on maintaining dental health at home.

No one ever really expects a dental emergency to occur, but accidents and issues have a funny way of catching us off guard. Whether it’s a sudden toothache, a knocked-out tooth, or a fractured crown, knowing when to seek emergency dentistry is crucial for preserving or restoring your oral health and preventing further complications.

Are you currently dealing with a dental crisis? If so, stay calm and assess the situation. If you are experiencing extreme pain, severe bleeding, or rapidly worsening conditions, head to your nearest emergency room. If your condition is stable, call Chisholm Trail Smile Center in Duncan, OK, at (580) 255-4880 now. We can administer rapid care to get you smiling and feeling your best in no time!

In this blog post, we explore common dental emergencies and help you understand when it’s time to seek immediate dental care.

Severe Tooth Pain

If you’re experiencing persistent, excruciating pain that over-the-counter pain relievers can’t alleviate, you may need emergency dentistry. Severe toothaches could indicate an infection or other serious issues that require prompt attention to prevent the condition from worsening.

Knocked-Out Tooth

If you or someone you know has had a tooth knocked out due to an accident or injury, try to gently place the tooth back into its socket (if possible). If that’s out of the question, then store the tooth in a container of milk or saline solution before heading straight to the dentist.

Cracked or Fractured Teeth

Rinse your mouth with warm water immediately and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Contact our emergency dentist in Duncan, OK, promptly. We can assess the extent of the damage and recommend appropriate treatment, which may include a dental crown or bonding.

Lost Crown or Filling

If a dental crown or filling falls out, it can leave the exposed tooth vulnerable to further damage and decay. Seeking emergency dentistry is key to preventing unnecessary complications. So, head to our dental office as soon as possible to replace lost restorations.

Infections and Abscesses

If you are experiencing severe pain, swelling, and persistent foul breath, then you may be living with an oral infection. These kinds of infections do not go away on their own, so it’s important to seek care and antibiotics at an emergency dentistry clinic.

Bleeding Gums or Oral Trauma

Excessive bleeding from the gums or trauma to the mouth, face, or jaw requires immediate attention. In some cases, a trip to the emergency room is the best course of action. If you are struggling to get bleeding, swelling, and pain under control, get to the nearest hospital immediately.

Emergency Dentistry Near Duncan, OK

There is evidence to suggest that nearly two million emergency room visits are related to dental pain and trauma every year. If you’re unsure whether you’re dealing with an emergency or not, play it safe – contact Chisholm Trail Smile Center today. Dr. Matthew Bridges can help you determine the extent of damage and make recommendations to reinstate your oral health rapidly. Just call (580) 255-4880 or contact us online here to get the care you need today.

Dental implants have revolutionized the field of restorative dentistry, providing a durable and natural-looking solution for missing teeth. However, like any medical procedure, there are potential downsides to consider.

If you’re considering tooth implants, then it’s important to talk to a trusted and experienced dentist in Duncan, OK, first. Come discuss the procedure with Dr. Matthew Bridges at Chisholm Trail Smile Center. Simply call (580) 255-4880 to request your consultation now!

In this article, we delve into the disadvantages of dental implants. Shedding light on their limitations can help you make a fully-informed decision about your health.

Dental Implants are Expensive

One of the significant drawbacks of dental implants is their cost. Compared to other tooth replacement options (such as dentures or bridges), implants tend to be far more expensive

But, the cost is reflective of the rigors of the procedure. For example, the procedure involves multiple stages, including the implant placement, abutment attachment, and restoration placement. These steps require expertise and specialized materials, driving up the overall cost

While implants offer long-term benefits, the initial financial investment can be a deterrent for some individuals.

It Is a Surgical Procedure

Dental implant placement is a surgical procedure that involves minor incisions and drilling into the jawbone. This aspect of the treatment may cause discomfort and swelling, which can be managed with medication and proper care.

However, some individuals may experience postprocedural complications such as infection, nerve damage, or sinus problems. Additionally, patients with certain medical conditions or insufficient bone density may not be suitable candidates for implants, further limiting their options.

There Is a Lengthy Healing Time

Unlike other tooth replacement options that dentists can complete within a few appointments, dental implant treatment requires a significant healing period. After a dentist places an implant, the surrounding bone needs time to fuse with it through a process called osseointegration. This healing phase can take several months, during which temporary solutions may be required.

Most dentists prefer to wait at least six months before fixing a dental restoration to an implant. But, the lengthy healing time can be inconvenient for those seeking a quick resolution to their missing teeth.

Room for Potential Complications

Although dental implants have a high success rate, complications can arise in some cases. These may include:

  • Peri-implantitis (inflammation around the implant)
  • Implant failure
  • Bone loss

Poor oral hygiene, smoking, or underlying health conditions can increase the risk of these complications. Regular check-ups and diligent oral care are crucial to minimize the chances of such issues.

Patients Must Have Adequate Bone Density

To ensure successful implant placement, patients need to have sufficient bone density in the jaw. In cases where the bone density is not adequate, additional procedures (such as bone grafting) may be necessary to augment the bone volume

These supplemental procedures increase the complexity and cost of the treatment, as well as extend the overall timeline. Insufficient bone density can limit the candidacy of some individuals for dental implants, leading them to explore alternative tooth replacement options.

Dental Implants in Duncan, OK

While dental implants offer numerous advantages, it’s essential to consider their drawbacks before committing to the treatment. Consult with Dr. Matthew Bridges at Chisholm Trail Smile Center today to see if tooth implants are right for you. Request your appointment online here, or call our team at (580) 255-4880 for scheduling and information.

Cavities (also called dental caries or decay) are a common tooth problem that affects people of all ages. When the outer layer of a tooth (called tooth enamel) becomes weak, a cavity is likely to form. Fortunately, preventive dentistry solutions with a dentist at Chisholm Trail can help you avoid damaging dental decay.

Fight cavities and enhance your oral health with our dentist at Chisholm Trail, Dr. Matthew L. Bridges. Schedule appointments and request more information from the team at Chisholm Trail Smile Center in Duncan, OK, at (580) 255-4880.

In this blog, we discuss why we get cavities, how they form, and what we can do to avoid them.

Why do we get cavities?

The bacteria in our mouths are largely responsible for cavities. They form a sticky, biological film called plaque. This sticky plaque adheres to the teeth and accumulates, mostly along the gumline and hard-to-reach areas (like between the teeth).

Plaque and bacterial by-products are mostly acidic. This acid can dissolve the tooth’s enamel, leading to cavities.

According to our dentist at Chisholm Trail, There are several factors that can increase the risk of cavities, including:

  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Frequent snacking without brushing afterward
  • Sugary and acidic foods and drinks
  • Dry mouth
  • Genetic factors
  • Certain medical conditions and medications

Dentist at Chisholm Trail Explains How Cavities Form

Cavities form when the tooth’s enamel becomes weak and breaks down. This can happen when the pH level in the mouth drops below 5.0. The acid produced by the bacteria in plaque can lower the pH level in the mouth, leading to demineralization of the tooth’s enamel.

Once the enamel is weakened, the bacteria can penetrate the tooth’s surface and form a cavity. The cavity will continue to grow as the bacteria feed on the sugars in the food we eat.

If left untreated, cavities can lead to toothaches, infections, and even tooth loss.

How can we avoid cavities?

The primary way to avoid cavities is to conduct good, daily oral hygiene. This includes:

  • Brushing all surfaces of your teeth at least twice every day with remineralizing toothpaste
  • Flossing at least once daily
  • Visiting your dentist for regular check-ups and cleanings

In addition to good oral hygiene, there are several other things you can do to avoid cavities, such as:

Reduce Acidic and High-Sugar Foods and Drinks

Yummy treats that are high in sugar and acid can increase the risk of cavities. So. try to limit your consumption of these foods and drinks. Instead, opt for healthier alternatives, such as fruits, vegetables, and water.

Chew Sugar-Free Gum

Chewing sugar-free gum can stimulate saliva production. As a result, it can help neutralize the acid in the mouth and prevent cavities.

Use Fluoride Products

Fluoride helps strengthen the tooth’s enamel and can prevent cavities. Ask our dentist at Chisholm Trail about fluoride treatments at your next dental visit.

Drink Plenty of Water

Drinking water can help flush out the bacteria and acid in the mouth. It can also promote healthy saliva production.

Consider Dental Sealants

Our dentist at Chisholm Trail can apply dental sealants to the back teeth to prevent cavities. These thin coatings prevent wear and tear and keep bacteria at bay.

If you want to avoid devastating dental problems (like cavities, gum disease, and bad breath), then you’ll need to prioritize your oral hygiene. Yearly preventive dentistry appointments with our family dentist in Duncan, OK, help keep teeth and gums healthy and clean. However, daily brushing and flossing are really our first line of defense against oral issues.

We are almost halfway through this year. Have you scheduled a dental exam and cleaning yet? If not, then it’s time to contact Dr. Matthew L. Bridges at Chisholm Trail Smile Center in Duncan, OK. Brushing and flossing are the most important daily practices for keeping teeth and gums healthy. But, how do you know which products to use? In this blog, our family dentist in Duncan, OK, explores some of the most recommended oral hygiene products by dentists.

Electric Toothbrushes

Electric toothbrushes have become increasingly popular in recent years and for very good reason. According to the Oral Health Foundation, they are more effective in removing plaque and bacteria from teeth and gums than manual toothbrushes

Electric toothbrushes also have timers and pressure sensors. Our family dentist in Duncan, OK, finds this helpful, as it takes the guesswork out of proper brushing techniques.

Water Flossers

Water flossers (commonly called oral irrigators) are devices that use a concentrated stream of water to clean between teeth and along the gum line. They can effectively remove food particles and bacteria from hard-to-reach areas, making them an ideal tool for patients with:

  • Braces
  • Dental implants
  • Dental bridges
  • Mobility issues

Tongue Scrapers

Tongue scrapers are dental tools that help remove bacteria, food debris, and dead cells from the surface of the tongue. This can help improve bad breath, as the majority of oral bacteria that cause odor are found primarily on the tongue. Our family dentist in Duncan, OK, recommends tongue scraping at least once a day for improved hygiene.

Remineralizing Toothpaste

Remineralizing toothpaste is a staple of any good oral hygiene routine. The mineral-rich ingredients (like fluoride or nano-hydroxyapatite) help strengthen tooth enamel, making teeth more resistant to decay and damage.

Mouthwash

Mouthwash is an effective way to kill bacteria in the mouth, freshen breath, and prevent gum disease between brushings. However, it should not replace regular brushing and flossing.

Sugar-free Gum

Chewing sugarless gum after eating can help encourage saliva production. This is crucial for good oral health because saliva helps to neutralize enamel-destroying acids produced by microbes in the mouth. Saliva also washes away food particles that can lead to decay.

Our family dentist in Duncan, OK, recommends looking for ingredients like xylitol, which deter the growth of cavity-causing bacteria in the mouth.
