As we age, maintaining a healthy and functional smile can become a bit of a challenge. For many seniors, mouth reconstruction becomes not just an option, but a necessity to restore both function and aesthetics. That’s where restorative dentistry treatments at Chisholm Trail Smile Center come into play.

Whether it’s tooth loss, bone resorption, gum disease, or cavities, time can take a toll on our smiles. With Dr. Matthew L. Bridges, however, you can halt the sands of time and restore optimal oral aesthetics and performance. Learn more by calling our dentist in Duncan, OK, at (580) 255-4880.

In today’s blog, Dr. Bridges demonstrates how mouth reconstruction for older adults can bring back the joy of a confident smile and the comfort of proper chewing and speaking.

Why Mouth Reconstruction Matters for Seniors

For older adults, mouth reconstruction isn’t just about looking good – it’s about ensuring your teeth and gums can perform essential tasks effectively

Eating your favorite foods, speaking clearly, and enjoying social interactions without the worry of dental issues are all crucial parts of a fulfilling life. Mouth reconstruction can address these needs by providing solutions tailored to the unique challenges that come with aging.

Common Dental Issues in Seniors

As the years go by, various dental problems can arise. Tooth loss, for example, is common and can lead to the relocation of remaining teeth, occlusion problems, and even tissue loss in the jaw.

Additionally, gum disease, which can worsen over time, may cause teeth to become loose and eventually fall out.

Decades of use can also wear down teeth, leading to cracks, chips, and discoloration. Mouth reconstruction can address all these issues with a comprehensive approach.

What Mouth Reconstruction Involves

Typically, mouth reconstruction for seniors involves multiple procedures designed to rebuild and restore the teeth, gums, and jawbone. Here’s a glimpse into what might be involved:

Dental Implants

These are a popular choice for replacing missing teeth. Implants provide a stable foundation for artificial teeth, help maintain jawbone integrity, and can last for several decades.

Crowns and Bridges

Crowns and bridges are dental prosthetics that can restore one or more damaged or missing teeth, enhancing both function and appearance.

Dentures

For those who have lost many or all of their teeth, dentures can be a game-changer. Modern dentures are comfortable and natural-looking.

Gum Treatment

Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy mouth. Treatments can include scaling and root planing to clean below the gum line, and even surgical procedures to restore gum health.

Tailoring Mouth Reconstruction for Seniors

Mouth reconstruction for seniors requires a gentle and thoughtful approach. Here are a few considerations:

Bone Density

With age, bone density can decrease, making some procedures (like implants) more complex. Bone grafts might be necessary to establish a solid foundation.

Medical Conditions

Seniors often have other health concerns that need to be taken into account. Diabetes, heart disease, and medications can all affect dental treatments.

Comfort and Convenience

Procedures should be as minimally invasive as possible. Recovery times and comfort are key considerations, ensuring that seniors can return to their routines quickly.

Mouth Reconstruction for Seniors in Duncan, OK

Imagine enjoying a steak dinner without hesitation, speaking clearly during family gatherings, and flashing a confident smile in photos. Mouth reconstruction can make these scenarios a reality for seniors, giving back both function and aesthetics.

So, if you’re a senior considering mouth reconstruction, contact Chisholm Trail Smile Center in Duncan, OK, today. New and current patients can request information and appointments online or at (580) 255-4880.

Built-up plaque and tartar, dark teeth, decayed teeth, and missing teeth make people appear older than their age. Not only do these dental problems look unhealthy, but dental disease, gum disease, and oral cancer put the entire body at risk of serious health issues. If your dental health is in disrepair, don’t be embarrassed, take action. The Chisholm Trail Smile Center Team wants to help you with restorative dentistry to reclaim your beautiful smile and great dental health

In Duncan, OK, Dr. Matthew Bridges and our team prioritize patient comfort, so don’t allow anxiety to rule your health. Instead, call us at 580-255-4880 and schedule a consultation with Dr. Bridges. No one on our team will judge you for the state of your oral health. We will commend your efforts to pursue good health!

Prevalence of Oral Health Problems in the USA

Every year, dentists place 175 million dental fillings and 2.3 million dental crowns in the mouths of your fellow Americans. Crowns and fillings are the most common treatments in restorative dentistry.

Only 1% of humans avoid tooth decay in their lifetime. The vast majority, 99%, need a filling or crown at some point.

According to the American College of Prosthodontists, more than 36 million adults in the USA have no teeth, while 120 million are missing one or more teeth.

Nearly 59,000 Americans are diagnosed with oral or oropharyngeal cancer each year. Oral cancer claims the life of one person per hour, every single day. Early detection and treatment are imperative.

These stats should bring you comfort because you aren’t alone. Even better, we’re here to help you on your journey to restored dental health.

Restorative Dentistry Services in Duncan, OK

As a family and restorative dentist, Dr. Bridges diagnoses, prevents, and treats oral diseases, using proven techniques and patient comfort measures. Our restorative dentistry services improve oral function and appearance while also improving oral (and in turn, overall) health and boosting patients’ self-confidence.

In addition to preventive and cosmetic treatments, we offer these restorative dentistry services:

  • Fillings
  • Crowns
  • Bridges
  • Implants
  • Dentures
  • Root Canal Therapy
  • TMD/TMJ Treatment
  • Sleep Apnea/Snoring Cessation
  • Full Mouth Reconstruction
  • Nitrous Oxide for Patient Comfort

Full-Mouth Restoration

When a patient needs more than two restorative dentistry procedures, Dr. Bridges may create a full mouth restoration treatment plan. Some patients need crowns, fillings, root canal therapy, gum treatments, and replacement teeth, while others simply need extractions and dentures.

For convenience, affordability, and comfort, we often break big treatment plans into quadrants of the mouth. This means, the dentist will treat one-quarter of the mouth before moving to the next quadrant, over multiple appointments that suit your schedule.

Full mouth restoration repairs damaged teeth, replaces lost teeth, and heals diseased gum tissue. Furthermore, the dentist makes certain that the patient’s occlusion–how upper and lower teeth fit together when the mouth is closed–is balanced. Healthy occlusion prevents tooth wear and breakage and deters temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD/TMJ).

A full set of strong, beautiful teeth and good oral health will also prevent bad breath caused by tooth decay and gum disease. So not only will you feel and look healthier, but your breath will smell fresh after brushing and flossing at home.

To maintain your restored smile, brush twice a day and floss once, using antibacterial mouthwash afterward. Adding a tongue scraper to your oral care arsenal will help by removing smelly bacteria from grooves in your tongue. Additionally, visit Dr. Bridges every six months for a thorough dental checkup and cleaning.

Call Today for Your Restorative Dentistry Appointment

We offer everything you need to restore oral health, freshen your breath, and beautify your smile, without anxiety, judgment, or fear. What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants have revolutionized the field of dentistry by offering a permanent solution to tooth loss. Unlike other restorative options, like bridges and dentures, implants provide a stable and durable foundation for replacement teeth, mimicking the natural structure of a tooth.

A Solid Foundation for a Lifetime

One of the key factors that set implants apart is their exceptional durability. The implant itself is typically made from titanium, a biocompatible material that merges with the jawbone through a process called osseointegration. This fusion creates a robust bond that mimics the strength of natural tooth roots.

As a result, implants provide unparalleled stability and support for replacement teeth. Unlike removable dentures, which can slip or click during speech and chewing, implants stay firmly anchored in place. This stability not only enhances comfort but also allows individuals with tooth implants to enjoy a full range of foods without restrictions.

Longevity Beyond Comparison

With proper care and maintenance, implants can last for decades, and in many cases, a lifetime. Traditional tooth replacement options, such as bridges and dentures, may require frequent adjustments or replacements over the years due to wear and tear. In contrast, dental implants offer a more permanent and cost-effective solution in the long run.

Dental implants are highly durable and can resist decay better than natural teeth. They are not prone to cavities. However, it is necessary to maintain proper oral hygiene to prevent gum disease and maintain the health of the surrounding tissues.

Preserving Jawbone Health

Beyond their remarkable durability, tooth implants contribute to the preservation of jawbone health—a critical factor often overlooked in tooth replacement considerations. When a tooth is lost, the jawbone can begin to deteriorate over time due to lack of stimulation. By integrating with the jawbone, dental implants provide the necessary stimulation to prevent bone loss.

This preservation of jawbone density not only maintains facial aesthetics but also ensures the stability of neighboring teeth. Without the support of implants, adjacent teeth may shift over time, leading to misalignment and further dental issues. The long-term benefits of implants extend beyond the replacement of a single tooth; they contribute to overall oral health and the structural integrity of the entire dental arch.

Investing in a Lifetime of Smiles

While the initial investment in dental implants may seem higher compared to other tooth replacement options, the long-term benefits far outweigh the cost. Consider implants as an investment in your oral health and quality of life. The durability and lifespan of implants offer a reliable and permanent solution, reducing the need for frequent replacements or adjustments associated with other dental prosthetics.

Dental Implants in Duncan, OK

Tooth implants are unrivaled in durability, their impressive lifespan, and their positive impact on jawbone health. Choosing implants is not just a decision for today; it’s an investment in a lifetime of smiles, comfort, and confidence. If you are considering tooth replacement options, call us today at 580-255-4880 to explore the lasting benefits that dental implants can bring to your oral health journey.

Your experience with dentures may have been seeing them eerily suspended in a glass beside your grandparents’ bathroom sink. Maybe your grandpa pushed his dentures out to prompt laughter from you and your siblings. Dentures have come a long way in the past five decades. Now, not only do they look more natural than in any previous generation, but permanent implants with dentures eliminate any potential for slippage and wobbling.

In fact, the all-on-four implant with dentures system offers patients many benefits that our grandparents didn’t have. In today’s blog, we’ll review some of those benefits and explain how four little implants with dentures can vastly improve your quality of life.

What Is All-on-Four?

The All-on-Four dental implant technique involves creating a surgical template to guide implant placement so that posts are placed in the most ideal position within the jaw. Four dental implants can hold an upper or lower denture in place.

The procedure is done in one day, and in most cases, the patient is fitted with a temporary denture at the same time. The temporary will not endure forever, but it will allow the patient to eat, speak, and smile with confidence as osseointegration occurs. The term osseointegration refers to bone growing around dental implant posts, and it takes about nine months.

After the bone has sufficiently anchored the implant posts, the long-term, actual denture will replace the temporary.

5 Benefits of the Implant with Dentures System

Patients who wear traditional dentures miss out on many benefits of All-on-Four or a similar implant with dentures system. With implant dentures, you can enjoy:

  • Confidence: Knowing that your dentures will never slip, wobble, slide, or loosen will allow you to dine out with friends and family, without worrying about embarrassing denture accidents. You can smile confidently because you’ll look fantastic.
  • Comfortable Function: Implants with dentures feel like natural teeth. They function like natural teeth, too. If you’ve experienced speech and enunciation issues due to missing teeth or improperly fitted dentures, don’t expect the same problems with All-on-Four.
  • Longevity of Your Investment: With proper care and continued good health, you can expect your implant dentures to last the rest of your life! The denture itself will need replacement with time, but your implants should last forever.
  • Jawbone Retention: Another benefit of implants with dentures is that implant posts stimulate the jawbone to aid in bone retention. When you chew foods with natural teeth, teeth roots create vibrations. The vibrations let the brain know that your teeth are still in use, so your jawbone needs nutrition to remain strong.

When teeth are gone, the jaw holds no teeth roots. Even if you wear traditional braces there are no teeth roots. So, your brain tells your body to divert bone-enriching minerals to other bones that are still working, like arms and legs. As a result, the jawbone shrinks, so dentures no longer fit well and your face looks older.

Implants replace teeth roots, so when you eat, they create the necessary vibrations to ensure good jaw health.

Dental work doesn’t need to be obvious. With a focus on both dental health and esthetics, Dr. Matthew Bridges provides natural-looking restorations as an alternative to what was available in previous generations of restorative dentistry–obvious metal dental fillings, crowns, and bridgework.

You should never feel indulgent or selfish for wanting an attractive, natural-looking smile. Studies show that a smile is one of the first things people notice about a person. As such, the smile is responsible for making a first impression, even before you speak. We know from polls that a complete smile with white, straight teeth sends the impression of intelligence, friendliness, success, attractiveness, and good health. This translates into a positive first impression in all activities: social, romantic, and professional.

If you have obvious metal dental work and would like it replaced with all-white restorations, or you need new restorative dentistry, Dr. Bridges invites you to learn more in today’s blog. We’ll review the ins and outs of:

  • White Fillings
  • White Crowns
  • Metal-Free Bridges

White Fillings

First, let’s talk about amalgam. Dental amalgam has been used to restore tooth decay in the United States since its introduction in 1833, nearly 200 years ago. Today, amalgam is made up mostly of silver, tin, and copper. It also contains trace amounts of other metals, including the toxic heavy metal mercury.

Patients with mercury sensitivity should not get amalgam fillings. In fact, if you’re concerned about the impact your amalgam fillings may have on your health, ask Dr. Bridges about replacing them with metal-free composite resin fillings.

Today, we prefer to fill all cavities with composite resin. Dr. Glud will custom-tint metal-free resin so that it blends with the dental enamel on your affected tooth. This will make your new fillings virtually impossible to discern from natural tooth structure.

White Crowns

Restorative dentistry, particularly for front teeth that show when you smile, should look natural and endure the rigors of biting foods. Molars, however, must endure more pressure than front teeth. If you need a crown on a molar, Dr. Bridges offers all-white, long-lasting zirconia crowns. These options will keep your smile white throughout.

A Note About Insurance Coverage for Restorative Dentistry

In some cases, insurance won’t pay for white fillings and crowns on front teeth. Should your insurance only pay for metal restorative dentistry and you desire white fillings and crowns, our financial advisors can adjust your treatment plan so that you pay the difference in cost. We also offer financing with low and no interest for qualified patients.

Metal-Free Bridges

Depending on where you’ve lost teeth (or a tooth), you may be eligible for an all-ceramic bridge. In the past, bridges had to have a metal core, so they were all made of porcelain fused over metal (PFM). On front teeth, PFM bridges eventually reveal a dark blue line at the base of the crowns that anchor the bridge. To keep your smile white and beautiful, Dr. Bridges prefers to place all-ceramic bridges in the smile zone.

Dental implants have revolutionized the field of restorative dentistry, providing a durable and natural-looking solution for missing teeth. However, like any medical procedure, there are potential downsides to consider.

If you’re considering tooth implants, then it’s important to talk to a trusted and experienced dentist in Duncan, OK, first. Come discuss the procedure with Dr. Matthew Bridges at Chisholm Trail Smile Center. Simply call (580) 255-4880 to request your consultation now!

In this article, we delve into the disadvantages of dental implants. Shedding light on their limitations can help you make a fully-informed decision about your health.

Dental Implants are Expensive

One of the significant drawbacks of dental implants is their cost. Compared to other tooth replacement options (such as dentures or bridges), implants tend to be far more expensive

But, the cost is reflective of the rigors of the procedure. For example, the procedure involves multiple stages, including the implant placement, abutment attachment, and restoration placement. These steps require expertise and specialized materials, driving up the overall cost

While implants offer long-term benefits, the initial financial investment can be a deterrent for some individuals.

It Is a Surgical Procedure

Dental implant placement is a surgical procedure that involves minor incisions and drilling into the jawbone. This aspect of the treatment may cause discomfort and swelling, which can be managed with medication and proper care.

However, some individuals may experience postprocedural complications such as infection, nerve damage, or sinus problems. Additionally, patients with certain medical conditions or insufficient bone density may not be suitable candidates for implants, further limiting their options.

There Is a Lengthy Healing Time

Unlike other tooth replacement options that dentists can complete within a few appointments, dental implant treatment requires a significant healing period. After a dentist places an implant, the surrounding bone needs time to fuse with it through a process called osseointegration. This healing phase can take several months, during which temporary solutions may be required.

Most dentists prefer to wait at least six months before fixing a dental restoration to an implant. But, the lengthy healing time can be inconvenient for those seeking a quick resolution to their missing teeth.

Room for Potential Complications

Although dental implants have a high success rate, complications can arise in some cases. These may include:

  • Peri-implantitis (inflammation around the implant)
  • Implant failure
  • Bone loss

Poor oral hygiene, smoking, or underlying health conditions can increase the risk of these complications. Regular check-ups and diligent oral care are crucial to minimize the chances of such issues.

Patients Must Have Adequate Bone Density

To ensure successful implant placement, patients need to have sufficient bone density in the jaw. In cases where the bone density is not adequate, additional procedures (such as bone grafting) may be necessary to augment the bone volume

These supplemental procedures increase the complexity and cost of the treatment, as well as extend the overall timeline. Insufficient bone density can limit the candidacy of some individuals for dental implants, leading them to explore alternative tooth replacement options.

Missing teeth not only affect your appearance. They can also impact your speech and ability to eat. And the gaps in your smile can lead to shifting teeth and, eventually, further tooth loss. Fortunately, a variety of restorative dentistry treatments are available to replace lost teeth and restore complete oral function. Dental bridges are the traditional method of tooth replacement, and they are still a realistic and reliable option. In recent years, however, implants have become an increasingly popular restorative solution.

At Chisholm Trail Smile Center in Duncan, OK, Dr. Bridges and his team offer a full range of restorative dentistry solutions. At a consultation, he will explain all of your options. Then he will work with you to choose a treatment that fits your health needs, as well as your budget, comfort level, and cosmetic goals

Contact our office to learn more about dental bridges and implants and to find out which treatment may be right for you.

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge can replace one or several adjoining missing teeth. Bridges are made of multiple attached dental crowns. The crowns on each end will sit on top of the neighboring natural teeth. To place a bridge and create sufficient room for the crowns, your dentist will need to reshape these teeth.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants replace the missing dental roots. These small posts will be surgically placed in your jaw, where they will fuse with the healthy bone tissue. This process could take up to six months. Once the implants have fully integrated with the jaw, Dr. Bridges will attach a custom-made restoration to the top of the implant post or posts.

The Benefits of Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are a more conservative choice than implants. If you select a bridge, you will not need to undergo surgery. Additionally, you will not need to wait for complete healing before you can receive your restoration. Instead, your treatment will usually take just two appointments spaced a few weeks apart. Finally, dental bridges cost less than implants, and insurance may cover a greater amount of the treatment cost.

The Benefits of Implants

Although bridges are more conservative, implants are usually considered the ultimate tooth replacement. First, implants do not necessitate reshaping otherwise healthy teeth. More importantly, implants help to ensure overall oral health. Like tooth roots, they send regenerative signals to the jawbone, which help to prevent jaw deterioration and additional tooth loss.

Dental implants are also very durable. Studies show that 90 to 95% of implants last ten years or more. Finally, although implants have a bigger price tag upfront, because they last so long and can prevent the need for further restorative treatment, implants may save you money in the long run.

Candidacy for Bridges vs. Implants

To qualify for a bridge, your nearby teeth must be healthy enough to support the restoration. On the other hand, as a candidate for dental implants, you must have a sufficient amount of healthy jawbone tissue

Dr. Bridges can assess your candidacy for both treatments during a thorough exam using our advanced imaging technology.

Your smile can feel and look incomplete when you have one or more missing teeth. Furthermore, just one missing tooth increases the risk of losing more teeth. Prosthetic dentistry offers excellent options to restore and complete your smile. As you consider which replacement tooth/teeth option will work best for you, consult with a trusted implant dentist.

Dr. Matthew Bridges and our team at Chisholm Trail Smile Center will guide you through dental restoration choices, explaining options and answering all of your questions. At our dental office in Duncan, OK, we offer bridges, dentures, and dental implants. In today’s blog, we will dive into some of the most common questions about implants.

How do dental implants work?

A dental implant is a small, biocompatible post used to anchor a new tooth or teeth to your jaw. Dr. Bridges works with trusted, local oral surgeons and periodontists for the surgical portion of the dental implant process. Our team will oversee your case from beginning to end. Dr. Bridges offers the initial consultation, then after surgery, he will provide the final restoration: a custom crown, bridge, or full denture.

Dental implant surgery takes a few hours and falls under the heading of minor oral surgeries. You’ll be made comfortable with anesthetic and/or sedation, such as nitrous oxide, halcion, or valium. Then the surgeon will insert one or more dental implants into your jaw, in the empty socket(s) left by missing teeth. You may wear a temporary crown or denture until the final restoration is made.

Expect healing to take three to nine months as jawbone tissue fully fuses and integrates with the implant post(s).

Once the dental implant has fully fused to your bone and the surgeon clears you to get a permanent prosthetic, you will return to Dr. Bridges. After the new crown, bridge, or denture is attached to your implant(s), it will feel, fit, and function like natural, healthy teeth.

Why choose dental implants?

Missing teeth that aren’t replaced lead to a host of additional dental problems, including:

  • Shifting Teeth
  • Misaligned Teeth
  • Reduced Jawbone Density
  • Sagging Facial Muscles/Aged Appearance
  • Increased Risk of Gum Disease
  • Increased Risk of Further Tooth Loss

Dental implants are a popular choice for tooth replacement due to their many benefits, such as:

  • Providing the look and feel of natural teeth
  • Returning functionality to your mouth
  • Providing a success rate of 98 percent
  • Lasting up to 20+ years when cared for properly
  • Helping lower the risk of gum disease
  • Helping you retain your facial structure and youthful appearance
  • Lowering your risk of misalignment issues

What are the eligibility requirements for dental implants?

Most patients fit the eligibility standards for dental implants. However, some exemptions exist. Your implant dentist may suggest another course of treatment if you have any of the following issues:

  • You don’t meet the bone density requirements.

Your implant dentist will examine the density of your jawbone by taking x-rays of. If your jawbone has deteriorated, you may need a bone graft to improve jawbone strength. Once you’ve healed from this procedure, you can revisit the dental implant option.

  • You are in poor health.

Since getting dental implants requires a short, minor surgery, you need a strong immune system and good general health. Undergoing even an outpatient procedure could put further stress on your physical health.

  • You have unhealthy teeth and gums.

For a successful implant procedure, your teeth and gums must be healthy prior to surgery. Tooth decay or gum disease could create more issues for your new implant or worse, lead to serious illnesses

If you are missing teeth and are researching restorative dentistry, you have no doubt heard of dental implants. Implants are considered the gold-standard of tooth replacement, thanks to their remarkable durability and lifelike appearance. Plus, when you visit an implant dentist, you can enjoy better oral health, since the implants can prevent bone shrinkage and further tooth loss.

Wondering if you are a candidate for dental implants? Take our quiz to find out if this treatment may be right for you. Then visit Chisholm Trail Smile Center. Dr. Matthew Bridges will honestly assess your candidacy based on your oral and physical health

Contact us today to schedule your consultation

1. How many teeth are you missing?

No matter how many teeth you have lost, implants may be appropriate for you! Dental implants can support many types of restorations, including a single crown, a dental bridge, or a full denture. They are suitable for both the upper and lower dental arches.

2. Are you willing to undergo oral surgery?

You should only choose dental implants if you are willing to have surgery. During the first stage of treatment, an oral surgeon will place the implant posts in your jawbone. Once your jaw has healed, and the implants have integrated with your bone tissue, you will return to your implant dentist who will attach your restoration.

Fortunately, Dr. Bridges will refer you to a skilled local expert who will perform a precise procedure with minimal discomfort and a brief recovery time. According to one study, the most prominent side effect is swelling. Swelling will typically subside within five days, although women may have a slightly longer recovery time than men.

3. Do you suffer from periodontal disease?

One of the most significant consequences of periodontal disease is gum recession.  When gum disease is left untreated, the soft tissues will pull away from dental implants, and the posts won’t have enough support.

In many cases, however, appropriate periodontal care can restore your candidacy for implants. Although you will have a slightly higher risk of implant failure, the treatment is quite successful. Periodontitis patients have a 79.2% to 100% rate of implant survival over 1.2 to 16 years. In contrast, patients without gum disease have a 91.67% to 100% survival rate over the same period.

4. Have you been wearing dentures a long time?

If you have been missing teeth for many years, you have likely suffered a significant degree of jawbone loss. As a result, you may not currently have enough healthy tissue to support implant posts. Nonetheless, many patients qualify for bone grafting. In this procedure, an oral surgeon can restore lost tissue and create a sound foundation for implant posts.

5. Do you have any chronic health conditions?

Some long-term health conditions, such as uncontrolled diabetes, cancer, blood clotting disorders, and autoimmune disorders can make it difficult to heal from surgery. Additionally, certain medications can impact healing. Your implant dentist will discuss your medical history at your consultation. Although you may still qualify for implants, your surgeon will need to work in conjunction with your physician to assure your safety and wellbeing.
